About testosterone

Chemical properties and production

Like other steroid hormones, testosterone is derived from cholesterol. The largest amounts of testosterone are produced by the testes in men, but it is also synthesized in smaller quantities in women by the thecal cells of the ovaries, by the placenta, as well as by the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex in both sexes.

The effects of testosterone before birth

Most of the prenatal androgen effects occur between 7 and 12 weeks of gestation. The stimulated processes in the fetus are:
- Formation of thes scrotal sack
- Genital virilization (midline fusion, phallic urethra, scrotal thinning and rugation, phallic enlargement); although the role of testosterone is far smaller than that of Dihydrotestosterone.
- Development of prostate and seminal vesicles

Without this stimulation, female-like organ can develope.
 

Early infancy androgen effects

Early infancy androgen effects are the least understood. In the first weeks of life for male infants, testosterone levels rise. The levels remain in a pubertal range for a few months, but usually reach the barely detectable levels of childhood by 4-6 months of age. The function of this rise in humans is unknown. It has been speculated that "brain masculinization" is occurring since no significant changes have been identified in other parts of the body.

 

Effects in early puberty - Effects in preteen and early teenage boys and girls

These are the first visible effects of rising androgen levels in childhood, and occur in both boys and girls in puberty.

- Adult-type body odour
- Increased oiliness of skin and hair, acne
- Pubarche (appearance of pubic hair)
- Axillary hair
- Growth spurt, accelerated bone maturation
- Fine upper lip and sideburn hair
 

Efects during later puberty

Advanced pubertal effects begin to occur when androgen has been higher than normal adult female levels for months or years. In males these occur usually in the later stages of puberty, and occur in women after prolonged periods of heightened levels of free testosterone in the blood.

- Phallic enlargement (including clitoromegaly)
- Increased libido and frequency of erection or clitoral engorgement
- Pubic hair extends to thighs and ay reach up toward umbilicus
- Facial hair (sideburns, beard, moustache)
- Chest hair, periareolar hair, perianal hair
- Subcutaneous fat in face decreases
- Increased muscle strength and mass
- Deepening of voice
- Growth of the adam's apple
- Growth of spermatogenic tissue in testes, male fertility
- Growth of jaw, brow, chin, nose, and remodeling of facial bone contours
- Shoulders widen and rib cage expands
- Completion of bone maturation and termination of growth. This occurs indirectly via estradiol metabolites and hence more gradually in men than women.

The extent of body hair coverage vary considerably between individuals and between different races.Some races have much body hair, other very little.
 

Adult testosterone effects

Adult testosterone effects are more clearly demonstrable in males than in females, but are likely important to both sexes. Some of these effects may decline as testosterone levels decline in the later decades of adult life.

- Maintenance of muscle mass and strength
- Maintenance of bone density and strength
- Libido and clitoral engorgement/penile erection frequency.
- Mental and physical energy
 

Excessive testosterone in males can lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer although some recent studies suggest that the role of testosterone has less of a potentiating effect on prostate cancer, but that oestrogen has more of a role.

The male hormonal regulation

The production of testosterone is itself regulated by hormones from the anterior pituitary glands. thes follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone is found also in females, and by them stimulate female genital processes.

Lack of testosterone and consequences of this conditions

The production of testosterone usually declines with age. Also diseases in the testicles or injury to the testicles can cause decrease in the testosterone levels. Too low production of FSH in the pituitary or hypothalamic disturbances can further  cause a decreased production of testosterone. Some boys never get a full testosterone production during puberty and will suffer form problems due to this. Lack of testosterone causes several symptoms:

- The muscle mass declines.

- The body accumulates more fat, and likely at the bad sites, like around the mid.

- The testicles will shrink in aize.

- Psychological symptoms, like axiety can develope. Meny men will also think and react slower.

- There will be a decreases interest for sex and decreased sexual arousal.

- There will be problems with achieving good erections.

- There will be less bone desity.

- The baird will grow less well.

- The pubic hair will be thinner.

As somewhat good effect of low testosterone levels will be less hair loss on the scalp, and less tendensy to baldness.

The effects of testosterone supplements

Supplying testosterone to the body can reverse many of the symptoms associated with low testosterone levels. This can be done with injections, with tablets to chew so that the bormone is absorbed through the buccal nucosa, or with transdermal patches.

However by supplying the hormone itself, the body looses its controle of the testosterone levels. It can easily get too high at times and still to low at other times.This lack of controle can give adverse effects, for example breast development, increased tendensy for prostate enlargement, increased chance of developing prostate cancer, water retention and edema, heart problems and too prolonged erections that will not go down.

A better way of remending low testosterne levels is therefore to supply the body with stimulants that enhances the body's abilioty to produce testosterone and at the same time increases the ability to controle the testosterone production.

Testosterone releasers or testosterone production stimulants

On the market there ar many products based on natural ingredients with the aim of enhancing the body's ability to produce testosterone and controle its production of testosterone.

Testosterone production stimulants will contain several herbs, somewhat varying from product to product. Here are some of these herbs listed together with the effects that play a role in the improvement of testosterone production:

Tribulus terrestris: This is a herbs that has long been used in many countries to stimulate libido. The main action of this herb is to increase the testosterone level.

Horny Goat Weed:  Also this herb stimulates testosterone production. It also stimulate the sensorial nerves in the genital zone. The stimulating effects are due to the substance icariin.  Horny Goat Weed is a traditional botanical medicine used in China, Japan , India and Greece.

Saw Palmetto Berry - Fructus Serenoae: Saw Palmetto is a tonic and stimulates regeneration and building up of body tissues ( anabolic ). This anabolic effect will then stimulate the functional structures in the testicles that produce hormones, and the building up of muscles. The Saw Palmetto berries are further a sexual stimulant and aphrodisiac. They reduce an enlarged prostate glands, and help treat urinary tract problems.

Panax ginseng: Ginseng has a stimulating effect on regeneration of all body tissues. It has also a strengthening effect on the body's hormonal and nervous controle systems. Thus it stimulates also the production of testosterone and the controle of this production.

Wild Yam: This Mexican herb enhances the ability of the body to regulate and balance its over-all hormone production. It also enhances the fertility.

Ginko biloba: The leaves of this chinese tree strenghten the central nervous system and thereby it strenghtens the controle of the hormone production. It also improves the blood circulation in the sexual organs and thereby increases the ability of the testicles to produce its hormones.
