About minoxidil

Minoxidil (with trade names like Rogaine, Regaine, Avacor and Mintop) is a cyclic nitrogen-containging compund or amine.

The basic effect of the drug is to make small blood vessels dilate so that more blood is flowwing through the tissues.

This basic effect makes the blood pressure decrease if it is admistered to the whole body and it was first used as a medicine to lower blood pressure.

The drug can also however make hair grow better and make hair darken. Used as a hair growth remedy it is mostly used topically and as a topical remedy it is sold without prescripotions in many jurisdictions.

The drug seems to be most effective in young men, against baldness at the top of the scull and against baldness that is not very wide.

A study with men aged 18–50 with androgenic alopecia (male heriditary baldness) found that men with an aerage of 103 to 106 hairs/cm2 in the beginning, by application of a 5% solution of minoxidil for 32 weeks, increased their non-vellus hair density by an average of 39 hairs/cm2, while the placebo group had an increase of 5 hairs/cm2.

The increased hair vitality will howeer go away within some months when the treatment is stopped.

The working mechanism is not quite clear. It may howeer be so simple that the increased blood flow supports the hair follicles with more oxygen and nutrients. The drug opens the potassium channels in the cells. This may also help diffund more oxygen into the cells of the hair follicles.

Great side effects is mostly associated with oral admistration of minoxidil, while application on the skin is very safe. Reported side effects are: swelling of the face and limbs, rapid and irregular heartbeat, lightheadedness, cardiac lesions, and focal necrosis of the papillary muscle.

The alcohol and other solutants in the drug can cause dry scalp and dandruff.

Minoxidil may cause temporary hair loss before the hair begins to grow thicker. This occurs because the drug stimulates the latest stage of the hair cyclus where the hair is shed and then stimulates the grow of the new hair.

Minoxidil is deadly toxic to cats.
