Methods, Drugs and Supplements to Reduce an
Excessive Appetite
Medicines and supplements to reduce an abnormal appetite can be a help during a slimming process. On the market of today you can find both appetite suppressors related to the substance amphetamine and appetite reducers of herbal origin. Appetite suppressors are generally recommended to use together with a diet program and exercise, and only for a limited time period. They are never recommended to use as the only means of achieving a reduced weight.
Substances to reduce appetite have been used since the First World War. Soldiers used the stimulating substance amphetamine both to stimulate their fighting capacity and to reduce hunger. The same was done in the Second World War. After the last war, the civil market began to use amphetamine and related substances to help reduce the intake of food during weight loss efforts.
A. APPETITE SUPPRESSORS OF THE AMPHETAMINE GROUP
Amphetamine and related substances stimulate the alertness of the central nervous system and the impulse to external action. When zones of the brain dealing with external action are in high activity, signals are sent to zones controlling appetite, digestion and connected functions to reduce their activity. Thus central stimulating substances also reduce appetite. Since these drugs increase the bodily activity, they also help to reduce weight by inducing a higher rate of fat burning.
Some drugs of this group are also used as antidepressant, for example fluoxetine hudrochloride (Prozac).
Being central stimulants all these appetite suppressors also bear a certain risk of developing addiction, and of side effects like insomnia, agitation, manic reactions, hypertension, stroke, heart valve damage and heart rhythm disturbances.
Because of such dangerous effects, many of these substances have been banned from most markets as appetite suppressants, for example amphetamine itself, aminorex, fenfluramine, phenylpropanolamine and ephedrine. However, many of these substances are still used for other purposes, for example to stimulate heart activity and to regulate up a too low blood pressure.
Substances of this group available on the market today as appetite suppresants are: Phentermine, diethylpropion, phenidmetrazine, benzphetamine, sibutramine, rimonabant, oxyntomodulin and fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac).
In 1997 after 24 cases of heart valve disease in users of the drug Fen-Phen, fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine, were voluntarily taken off the market at the request of the FDA. Studies later showed nearly 30% of people having taking fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine had abnormal valve findings. Fen-Phen contained phentermine, fenfluarmine and dexfenfluarmine, but phentermine was not demanded to be taken off the market.
PHENTERMINE
Phentermine is perhaps the most widely used appetite suppressant drug today. It works by increasing the release of the hormones / neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonine and dopamine. The signals from these substances make the nervous system more alert for external action and reduce appetite. The drug acts both upon the thalamus portion of the brain and the adrenal glands. The released adrenal hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine also stimulate the fat cells to brake down stored fat, so that the drug also have a direct fat-removing action, but the most important weight-loss action is as appetite reducer.
Phentermine is a legal substance but bound to prescription in most jurisdictions. It is recommened only for short term use and only together with a process of learning a general lifestyle that over time will continue the weight reduction to its goal, and when the goal of weight reduction is fulfilled help to stay at a healthy weight.
Since phentermine releases hormons that sets the body and mind in an alertnes to respond with increased action, making the body and mind stressed, phentermine can cause exagerated processes of many kind in the body and mind. Side effects are tachycardia (increased heart rate), elevated blood pressure, palpitations, restlessness and insomnia. Additionally, phentermine can sometimes cause physical and psychological dependence.
The drug Fen-Phen that contained phentermine, fenfluarmine and dexfenfluarmine, was shown to cause heart valve failure. It was later proven that fenfluarmine and dexfenfluarmine could cause this side effect. It is believed that phentermine alone do not have this side effect when used as recommended.
EPHEDRA AND EPHEDRINE
Ephedrine is a central stimulant extracted from species of the plant genus Ephedra. The substance is banned in most communities as a appetite suppressor nowadays, but are used for other medical purposes, for example to stimulate heart activity and increase blood pressure. In some communities Ephedra as a herb is still used as a part of stimulating herbal preparations.
SIBUTRAMINE
Sibutramine works by reducing the reuptake of the hormones / neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinefrine and dopamine and thus increases the effects from these substances, with increased alertness and reduced appetite as a result.
RIMONABANT
This is a new drug working by blocking signals receptors that increase appetite upon signals from neurotransmitters / hormones. These are the same receptors that react upon contact with substances in the narcotic herb Cannabis. The main action of this drug is appetite reduction. In addition to appetite reduction it also seems to help smoking cessation for certain smokers. Severe depression may be a side effect of this drug.
B. MODERN HERBAL APPETITE SUPPRESSORS
Because of the potential side effects of appetite suppressors from the amphetamine group, people often turn to herbal appetite reducers with a very long history of use in their country of origin without having shown the same side effects. The herbal appetite suppressors Hoodia Gordonii and pinnothine are two such herbal appetite suppressors of increasing popularity. Preparations containing these herbs generally also contain herbs that increase the burning of fat, or herbs that reduce the uptake of fat or sugar from the intestines.
HOODIA GORDONII
This is a cactus-like plant native in the African dessert Kalahari. The San tribe living in this region has used the herb in centuries to suppress hungers during long hunting expeditions. In the long traditional use, the herb has shown to suppress hunger without side effects.
The plant contains substances whose molecules resemble glucose molecules. When there is enough glucose in the blood, the brain interprets it as a signal to reduce the hunger. The substances of the Hoodia Gordonii give the same signal to the brain, and thus reduce the appetite.
PINNOTHINE
This chemical complex is found on the seeds (nuts) of Korean Pine Nut tree Pinus Koraiensis (other spellings and mis-spellings: koreanenisi, koreaenis, coreaenis, coreanensis, coraiensis), and the working substance of Pinnothine is pinnoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid with 18 carbon atoms, three double bounds and with the first bound on the fifth carbon atom (omega-5 poly-unsaturated fatty acid). Pinnothine is also found in the nuts of other pine species, but not in the same degree as in Pinus koraiensis.
Pinnoleic acid reduces the appetite by inducing production of a larger amount of the appetite regulating signal substance cholecystokinin (CCK), which then is released into the blood circulation. CCK in the blood is interpreted by the brain as a command to reduce the feeling of hunger. Another ways CCK works, is by delaying the emptying of the stomach content into the intestines, and by giving signal to the gall bladder to empty its content with digestive enzymes into the small intestine. The stomach will therefore lack room for new food a longer time each day, and this reduces the urge to eat.
C
. ExerciseExercise on a moderate intensity and duration level can reduce the appetite. If you have not engaged in exercise before, beginning a program of regular exercise therefor can help you gain control of an excessive appetite. Harder or longer lasting exercise may increase the appetite. However, exercise will make you burn more fat and suger, and therefore exercise on any lavel that is good for you physically will help reduce weight. It is recommanded to do some exercise every second day.
C
. LeptineLeptine is a protein hormone produced by fat cells. The more fat stored in the fat cells, the more leptine is produced. Leptine signals to the brain part called hypothalamus to decrease the appetite, and the hormone helps regulate the food intake of an individual. Leptine also increases the metabolism, that is the burning of fat and sugar. It is important to live in such a way that the leptine production is not reduced, and hopefully increased.
Getting enough sleep is a way to hold the leptine levels high.
It is also neccessary to get a minimum level of fat and carbohydrates each day. To be over-eager with the slimming efforts, will reduce the leptine levels to dangerously low levels, and this will make you break you slimming efforts by over-eating and it will decrease your burning of fat and sugar.
Some people report that it is useful to take a couple of days each week with a higher inntake of fat and sugar than the other five days, and that this action lures the body to hold the leptine levels high.
C
. InsulineOne of the effect of insuline is to decrease appetite. To keep your insuline levels high enough, you must not be over-eager with your slimming, but have a minimum intake of fat and sugar each day. An over-eager effort wll bring your appetite to extreme levels and make you brake your slimming efforts.
D
. Get enough sleepTo get a normal night's sleep will help you to get slim, because of three effects:
When you do not sleep at night, you tend to eat during night. The metabolism is allways reduced during sleep, so that the food you take in during night will more easily deposit as fat.
When you do not sleep enough at night, your appetite will generally increase also during day.
Lack of sleep during night also decreases the burning or fat even more than the natural decrease that allways occurs during night.
These effects are due to the dynamics of the hormone leptine. Leptine decreases appetite and increases fat burning.
At night the hormone melatonine allways effects a normal decrease in the level of leptine, thus elevating the appetite and decreasing the metabolism or fat and sugar burning. Meals during night therefore allways tend to deposit as fat.
Lack of sleep decreases even more the leptine level during both day and night, thus the general appetite increases and the general fat burning decreases.
E
. Diet trics to reduce appetiteThe appetite is partly dependent of emptiness in the stomach, and partly dependent upon free capacity in the intestines to do digestive work.
By eating much food containing much plant fibers and much water, you can fill up the stomach well and reduce the appetite without getting too much of nutrient like fat and carbohydrates. Such food are veretables and full corn cereals. By adding bran you can bulk up the food even more so that the effect gets even stronger.
By eating food that it takes long time to digest you can also reduce appetite. Mushrooms contains very vauable proteins, have little fat and carbohydrates in them, contain much water and need a long time to digest. By havng a good portion of mushrooms in your dishes you both bulk up the food and make it slowly digestible.
Some people get a reduced appetite by eating more often, but small meals than sldome and bigger meals, but other people will increase the food intake this way. It can be an idea to try to change the number of meals each day and adjust the amount of food in each meal.
By eating something that contains a moderate amount of sugar as the first thing in the meal, you get a little elevated sugar level in your blood and that can make you eat less. Fruit is best for that purpose.
