About stem-cells

Stem-cells are cells found in several places in the body. These cells are not developed to specific organ cells or are only partially developed.

Upon proper stimulation, a stem cell can proliferete and develop into a matured organ cells of different types, and thus replace lost or injured cells in an organ.

The proliferation and development usually takes place in several stages. For each stage, the cells divide many times, and when the completely developed cells appear, the amount of new cells can be very great.

Some stem cells have the potentiallity to develope into a restricted group of cells in a specific organ, others have a more wide-ranged development potencial.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF STEM CELLS

Every organ has a battery of stem cells that can proliferate and replace lost cells. For example are the stem cells in the skin placed in or around the hair follicles.

In the brain and the spinal cord, there are also stem cells that can bevelop and replace nerve cells. Traditionally the scientists thought that lost nerve cells could not be replaced, but replacemant of nerve cells from stem cells has now been scientifically discovered.

In the spinal cord there are also stem cells that can be released into the blood stream, be taken up by other organs and there they can replace lost cells of that organ.

GROWTH FACTORS STIMULATING STEM CELLS

The body produces many compund called growth factors. Many of these stimulate stem cells to proliferate and develop into functional mature cells. A few examples of these are:

Colony stimulating factors stimulate the production and maturing of white blood cells. These are cells having important roles in the immune system.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) stimulates the production of fibroblasts, cells making the fibre content between cells in connective tissue.

Nerve growth factor stimulating stem cellcs in the nervous system and the growth of nerve cells.

Erythropoietin stimulating the production of red blood cells.

Transforming growth factors: There are many polypetide compounds called transforming growth factors, regulating stem cell activities in many body tissues. Especially the activity of epithelial stem cells is stimulated or modified by these peptides.Transforming growth factor -alpha (TGF-a) stimulate stem cells in the central nervous system to proliferate and differentiate.

THE FUNCTIONS OF STEM CELLS IN THE BODY

Stem cells play a vital part in the recovery from diseases and injuries. They also play a part in the daily replacement of lost cells. .

STEM CELLS USED IN TREATMENT

Stem cells are rutinously used in the treatment of cancer. By the most intensive radiation therapy and therapy with cystostatica, cells of the immune systems are destroyed. Before the treatment stem cells are harvested from the bone marrow of the patient. After the treatment, the stem cells are then given back to the patient, and from them new immune system cells grow.

By still experimental treatments, stem cells are used to cure diseases in the brain, for example Parkinson's disease.

There are also attempts going on to treat diabetes by stem cell implants so that lost insuline producing cells are replaced.

On a longer perspective, stem cells can probably be used to regenerrate lost teeth, regenerate lost hair, to remend heart failur or regenerate nerves.

The ultimate perspective of stem cell use is the total prevention of aging or to totally regain a youthful body. In the scientific community there is a kind of taboo for talking about this ultimate perspective of stem cell use. But total avoidance of aging is probably fully possible in a realistic future.

Stem cells for medical use can be, and is being harvested from aborted fetuses. Use of stem cells from fetuses is morally problematic. However, stem cells can also be harvested from the body of the patient himself, and this may be the standard way of finding stem cells in the future.
