Useful information
Here are some information about gemstones in the tourmaline group and malachite group. For more information articles about jewelry - please click here
The tourmaline group of gemstones
Tourmaline consists of 3-sided cylindrical
crystals, but the crystals are seldome perfectly composed, and may show extra
sides. The crystal can have nearly any color and the color can vary within one
and the same crystal with shades going ito each other.
Tourmaline is divided in many subgroups according to color, for example
Dravite subgroup: Brown - dravite.
Schorl subgroup: Black - schorl.
Elbaite subgroup named after the Island elba in Italy: Rose or pink - rubellite. Dark blue - indicolite. Light blue - Brazilian sapphire. Green - verdelite or Brazilian emerald. Colorless - achroite
Tourmaline is mostly transparent, but somwhat opaquely.
Tourmaline is mostly a silicate of aluminium and borone, but with a lot of other metallic ions entered into the crystallic lattice. It is of the trigonal crystal type. The colors of the crystals depend upon the chemical composition: Iron-rich tourmalines are from black to bluish-black to deep brown. Magnesium-rich crystals are vary between brown and yellow. Lithium-rich tourmalines can exhibit any color: blue, green, red, yellow, pink etc. Tourmaline can rarely be colorless.
The chemical formula of tourmaline varies according to type, and also to some extend within the same crystal. The following is a typical composition of tourmaline:
Na(Al,Fe,Li,Mg,Mn,Cu,V,Cr)3(Al,Mg,Fe,V,Cr)6[(Si,Al,B)6O18](BO3)3(OH,F,O)
The crystals are pizoelectric (making elctronic displacements upon external force) and also often pyroelectric (making electric displacements upon warming). Because warm crystals get electrically charged oppositely in the two ends, they can attract a lot of dust when warmed.
The hardness of tourmaline is 7 - 7.5, and the mineral is of the density 2.82 - 3.32. The crystals cleave and fracture in an indistinct irregular manner. It shows a white streak.
The main geografical origine of tourmaline today is Brazil, Africa and Sri Lanka. The mineral is found many other places, for example in Maine and California - USA. Tourmaline is mostly found in igneous rocks, especially in granite and granite pegmatite, and in metamorphic rocks, such as schist and marble.

Tourmaline crystal - The crystal is 0.8 inches or 2 cm long. The crystal has several colours indicating slight differences of chemical composition in the crystal. Such layered differnces indicate that the crystal has grown gradually with material from a source that has changed slightly in composition over time. (Free picture from wikipedia.org) |

The lapis lazuli group of gemstones
Lapis lazuli is a deeply blue opaque rock art,
composed of several minerals. The stone may have tiny spots of goldish yellow or
other colors spread throughout the specimen, or have a silvery or golden shine
due to minerals of other colors than blue. The rock may show veins of white
minerals, but such structures are generally not appiciated.
The main component of lapis lazuli is lazurite (25% to 40%), a feldspatoide mineral composed of sodium, aluminium, silicon, oxygen, sulfur and chlorine. The stone also also contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue) and pyrite (yellow), and may also contain augite, diopside, enstatite, mica, hornblende and nosean.
Lazurite's formula is (Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(S,SO4,Cl)1-2.
The stone has been used as a gem in at least 8000, years and was a very popular gem in ancient India and Egypt.
In Egypt this stone was the most important for amulets and jewelry. The use of the stone is very varied: Jewelry, carvings, boxes, mosaics, ornaments and vases. It has also been used for cladding the walls and columns of palaces and churches.
The finest lapis comes from the Badakshan area of Afghanistan. Other origines of the stone are Andes near Ovalle in Chile. The stones has also been found near Leke Baikhal in Russia, Siberia, Angola, Burma, California, Colorado, India and Canada.
